NAAM’s JUNETEENTH WEEK

Juneteenth 2021 was extraordinary. Not only did Washington State’s legislature make it a statewide holiday, but almost immediately thereafter President Biden signed a law that made Juneteenth a federal holiday too. It is incredibly meaningful to see this day become a nationally poignant civic reminder. 156 years ago, countless African Americans in Galveston, Texas had freedom withheld for two and a half years following the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Now the lives of those enslaved Americans will forever be nationally honored as a federal holiday. Each year henceforth on June 19, the nation will collectively remember, reflect upon, and renew ourselves to the high standards of justice and equity until all are truly free.

NAAM celebrated Juneteenth this year with tens of thousands of people over nine days. We are grateful to our host of enthusiastic partners, presenters, volunteers, vendors, and the generous support of major sponsor Amazon. NAAM and our community, together, advanced justice and equity, cultivated educational empowerment, and centered and celebrated Black history, art, and culture. Please join us in collectively celebrating a successful Juneteenth Week!
